밥 바이맨, PGA 투어 선수 출신

미국 네바다주 TPC 골프클럽에서 학생을 지도

밥 바이맨 프로는 뉴욕에서 출생 해 8살때 아버지로 부터 골프를 배우기 시작해 16살때인 1971년 콜로라도 스테이트 아마추어 챔피언쉽에서 우승을 했고 17살때인 1972년에는 미국 주니어 챔피언쉽에서 우승을 하며 US Open에 출전 하게 되어 당시까지 잭 니클라우스가 세웠던 최연소 출전 기록을 3개월이나 당기며 또다른 기록을 세웠다
골프 명문 워이크 포레스트 대학(Wake Forest University) 에 입학한 밥은 재학중인74, 75년 PGA 투어 에서 대 활약을 펼치고 있는 제이 하스와 커티스 스트렌지와 팀을 이뤄 우승을 이끌었고 미국 대학 연맹은 밥을  대학 남자 골프 최고의 선수로 선정하기도 했다.
이어 73년에도 콜로라도 아마추어 우승과 76년 노스이스트 아마추어 라이스 프란터스 아마추어등 6회의 우승을 하며 아마추어 시절을 마감한 밥 바이맨은 1976년 프로로 전향한 이후 이듬해인 77년 뉴질랜드,수에덴 홀래드에서 개최된 3개의 국제 대회에서 우승했고 1978년 PGA 투어 시드를 받아 13개 대회 출전만에 1979년 베이힐 사이투루스 클래식에서 마침내 우승한것을 비롯 브리티쉬 오픈에 출전해서는 공동7위에 올라  세계 골프랭킹25위에 오르며 놀라운 실력을 자랑했다.
 이후 유러피안 투어인 1977스칸디나비안 엔터프라이즈 오픈( Scandinavian Enterprise Open),독일 오픈( Dutch Open), 1978년 독일 오픈( Dutch Open)과, 1982년 스카니디나비안 엔터프라이즈 오픈( Scandinavian Enterprise Open) 등 4회의 우승했다.
79년 부터 84년까지 매해 2,30여개의 PGA 투어와 유러피안 투어를 오가며  왕성한 활동을 하던 밥은 PGA투어 평생 회원으로 필드를 떠나 새로운 변신을 했다.
85년 부터 짐 맥클레인 골프스쿨과 유명 골프 클럽에서 선수들을 지도했던  바이맨 프로는 2008년 골프 아카데미의 메카인 라스베가스로 삶의 터전을 옮겨 골프아카데미를 운영하고 있다.
현재 바이맨 프로가 운영하는 아카데미는 미국PGA 투어에서 운영하고 있는  라스베가스 TPC 골프 클럽 으로 최고의 골프대회 환경과 연습 조건을 갖춘곳이다.
이곳에서 배출된 선수들은 인격과 실력을 갖춘 진정한 골프인으로 골프 선수의 모범이 되도록 양성하기 위해 노력하고 있다.
놀라운 성장세를 보이고 있는 한국선수들에 특별한 관심을 가지고 지켜보고 있다는 밥 바이맨 프로는 자신이 지내왔던 숨막히고 긴장된 순간순간들의 기나긴 골프 여정을 소중한 골프의 꿈을 그리고 훈련하고 준비하는 학생들에게 선수로서의  정확하고 바른 길을 걸을수 있도록 지도 하고 있다.
바이맨 프로는 정신적으로 많은 부담감을 가지고 필드에 서는 선수들의 마음가짐과 자신의 스윙을 믿는 자신감을 갖도록 하고 미국이나 유러피안투어 같은 프로 무대에서 성공할수 있는 학생을 발굴해 지도하기 원하고 있다.
바이맨 프로는 내년3월경 한국을 방문해 한국의 골프 상황전반을 돌아보고 가능성 있는 학생들을 선발해 LPGA나 PGA 투어에 대비할수 있도록 할것이라는 계획을 밝혔다.

New York native Bob Byman, who learned golf at 8 years old from his father, won the Colorado State Amateur Championship in 1971 at the age of 16, and the U.S. Junior Championship the following year in 1972, breaking Jack Nicklaus’ record for the youngest player to play in the U.S. Open by three months.
After high school, Byman enrolled at Wake Forest University and joined its renown golf program, and was part of the famous team featuring future PGA Tour standouts Jay Haas and Curtis Strange that won two consecutive NCAA championships .
Byman won his third consecutive Colorado State Amateur Championship in 1973, and in 1976 turned professional after a total of six amateur victories. In 1977 Byman won three national opens in Sweden, Holland and New Zealand. After qualifying for the PGA Tour in 1978, Byman competed in 13 events, and won his first PGA Tour event in 1979 at the Bay Hills Classic. He also finished tied for 7^th in that year’s British Open, and climbed to 25^th in the world golf rankings.
Byman’s other professional wins include the 1977 Scandinavian Enterprise Open, the 1977 Dutch Open, the 1978 Dutch Open, and the 1982 Scandinavian Enterprise Open, for four total career victories.
From 1979 through 1984 Byman competed in between 20 and 30 PGA Tour and European Tour events, but left the touring professional’s lifestyle the following year as a lifetime PGA Tour member to pursue his passion of teaching others the game. Since 1985, Byman has taught numerous professional and amateur golfers as an instructor at the Jim McLean golf schools and various other famous golf clubs, and moved his golf instruction business to Las Vegas in 2008. Currently, Byman teaches at the TPC Las Vegas, as well as numerous other well-known clubs in the area.
Byman has always been particularly interested in the rapid growth of professional golfers of Korean descent, and finds great satisfaction in helping these up-and-coming players to not only improve their golf game, but also deal with the various challenges of being professional players.
As a former Tour player, Byman is more familiar with the unique pressures and stresses that Tour professionals experience, and uses his vast experience to assist players on the PGA and European PGA Tour to make the most of their abilities. In March of next year, Byman plans to travel to Korea to get acquainted with aspiring professionals with the potential to succeed overseas on the PGA and LPGA Tours.
