Jon Rahm sets his sights on the Masters
It doesn’t matter what the rankings are. I believe Jon Rahm is the best player in the world right now, and he is definitely the most exiting! Rahm is currently on a roll, and despite having to withdraw from the Players Championship due to sudden illness, and a flat match play showing, has been in the hunt in eight of his last ten events. This run included 3 victories, and 6 top 10 finishes. In each tournament he had a shot at the lead. Quite impressive in this day and age of parity on the World Golf Tour.
Also, Rahm has a flair for the dramatic! It has been his signature in each of his ten victories on the PGA Tour. He displays it often, recently capturing titles at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, The American Express Championship, and the LA Open at Riviera. Rivera was especially impressive. with another fabulous finish, outplaying the strongest field of the new season, and making a statement. He is one of those players that don’t need a highlight reel to showcase his victories or defeats vividly! Some of the losses, which he accepted with class, were as exciting and memorable as the wins!
Looking back to 2017, the young Spaniard served notice when He drained a 60-foot down-hill putt for eagle on the final hole at Torrey Pines, to capture his first title.! It was a sign of things to come!
And, if you think back on his championships, you will recall in 2022, Rahm drained a remarkable 67 foot breaking putt on the first “sudden death” hole to defeat former world number one Dustin Johnson and capture the BMW Championship at Olympia Fields CC in Chicago, finishing with weekend rounds of 66-64. You might also remember a dominant performance at the 2020 Memorial Tournament overcoming a two-shot penalty for a ball moving, and highlighted by holing out a remarkable chip on 16 to secure the win.
The recent victories added to his total of ten on the PGA Tour in his short career, and showcased his unique ability to rise to the occasion and perform at the highest level when it’s crunch time. These factors, along with 70 top ten finishes in 135 events, make him my favorite to win the upcoming Masters. It seems he is always in the mix!
In addition, Jon has showed remarkable strength of character, overcoming some slow starts, a few ups and downs, including a huge mental error at the 2021 Players Championship, (the Layup!) a rare one-stroke penalty for actually forgetting to mark his ball on the green during Saturday’s round at the BMW. He finished with a 66, and still coming out on top. He has the uncanny ability to brush the setbacks off, and finish strong to capture the titles.
What a pleasure to watch when Jon Rahm is in the field. It is his passion and fire that separates him from the rest, and leads to success when the stakes are the highest. And that equals victories and Major championships!
