Wyndham Clark, in his third U.S. Open appearance, showcased a remarkable performance, securing his first major victory with a one-stroke lead, despite previously missing the cut and finishing joint 75th in his six previous major appearances.

The 29-year-old Denver native displayed a resilient determination akin to a seasoned veteran, carding an even-par 70 on the final day to finish with a total score of 10-under 270, surpassing world-ranked No. 3 Rory McIlroy. This marked Clark’s second victory on the PGA Tour, following his first win at the Wells Fargo Championship last month.

“It’s like a dream, just like my first win at the Wells Fargo Championship. This victory feels surreal. It hasn’t sunk in yet. I got emotional walking down the 18th hole, and then at the moment of closure. The past five to six weeks have been truly memorable. I feel blessed to be standing here and humbled by it,” Clark said.

Ricky Fowler, who has five PGA Tour victories under his belt, had his sights set on his first major victory in this tournament but finished tied for 5th place with a 5-over 75, totaling 5-under 275, alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Im Min-woo.

World-ranked No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, also struggled for most of the day but finished strong with a 70 to secure 3rd place.

As Clark completed a tap-in par on the 18th hole, officially declaring his victory, he was immediately embraced by his sister, Kristin, and younger brother, Brendan. Clark’s father, Randall, a former professional tennis player, was also present to witness the match. However, one person was absent from the celebration, Clark’s beloved mother, Liz Tevney, who passed away from breast cancer at the age of 55 in 2013. Clark said, “What I really wanted was for my mom to be here, to hug her and celebrate with her. But I know she’s proud of me.” The battle with cancer involving Clark’s mother made him contemplate giving up golf during his time at Oklahoma State University, but winning the Pacific-12 Conference Championship held in his hometown of Boulder, Colorado, for the 2016-17 season and being named Player of the Year during Golf Week served as factors that kept him in the game.

Clark said that the advice he received from his mother before each tournament was to “play with a big heart.” He particularly thought about these words as he entered the weekend, finding himself paired with Ricky Fowler in the final pairing for the last two days. While Sunday’s round wasn’t flawless, he ultimately secured the victory through ups and downs on the 8th, 9th, 11th, and 17th holes.

Most people watching on TV or at the venue expected the three biggest names in golf history, McIlroy, Fowler, and Scheffler, to lift the trophy on the 18th green, and on Sunday, they received the loudest cheers. However, they all fell behind.

Fowler sought to create a feel-good story in this tournament. Having missed the cut in the last two U.S. Opens (last year, he was an alternate and the next player in), and dropping as low as 185th in the official world golf rankings, Fowler slowly regained his confidence and form since reuniting with coach Butch Harmon. The 2015 Players Champion, who had finished in the top 5 in all four majors in 2014 but failed to win, even said he wasn’t afraid of failure despite the struggles he faced in the past two years after Saturday’s third round.

Now he is a major champion in the city of stars. On Sunday, he officially joined that list.

The 124th U.S. Open Championship will take place from June 13th to 16th at Course 2 of the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in North Carolina.
